Department of Caffeine (D.O.C.)

Duxton Hill is quite the haven, isn’t it? I first heard about Department of Caffeine via Instagram. A name like that pressed all the right buttons with me and down it went on my list of café destinations.

I have to say D.O.C. blended in rather well with the mix of offices amidst the shophouses. So much so that my bud Krys & I walked right past it though we had our eyes peeled for sight of its site. It is inconspicuously hinged at a corner so don’t miss it!

The café chartered a soft industrial interior with a splash of sophistication and edge here and there with wooden panels and steel chairs, holding a comfortable crowd for 2pm on a Friday afternoon. Though I wasn’t hungry for a hearty heavy platter of eggs and the like, t’was definitely a downright bummer to know that they didn’t serve brunch on weekdays. Their menu was pretty limited as well but hold your horses and keep your disappointments at bay because Department of Caffeine hasn’t been raved about for nothing.

flat white

My flat white sat really well with me. As always, if the coffee doesn’t require sugar to salvage anything, it’s a good cup to me. What’s more, it came decked with some rather fine latte art and a cup in my favourite colour! Call me shallow but this was quite the perfect order. 😀

lavender cake

If I had a more generous appetite, I would have jumped straight for the Buttermilk Waffles. For a lighter order, the friendly barista recommended I get the Honey Lavender Tea Cake, known to be one of their best sellers. And for good reason too — While your tastebuds are doing a sweet waltz, the scent of lavenders take you into a meadow sprawled with its kind. Ah.

birthday gift

It also helps that my birthday present from dear ol Krys synced astonishingly well with my order for the day. Ha, what are the chances!

cakes and quiche

On the table: Honey Lavender Tea Cake, Breakfast Quiche, Carrot Cake and 2 Flat Whites.

Krys gave thumbs up for the quiche and was just all praise for the carrot cake that seemed to have charmed her off her feet with every bite. I kid you not. There was either love potion involved or some rather smashing cream cheese.

present and coffee

opening hours

We spent quite a few hours there only because the café was so comfortable to be in for an all-day chat. When it hardly looks like a café from the outside, you feel somewhat safe and hidden in a secret hideout, a door swing away from the unknown. That’s what it feels like. Only better — with good coffee and equally satisfying food.

I’ll be back for waffles!
